Self-employment is an exciting journey that combines opportunities and challenges. Psychological aspects play an important role in personal and professional growth. Being self-employed means autonomy and the exciting possibility of turning your own visions into reality.
People who take on the challenge of starting and running a business can increase their sense of purpose and gain professional and personal satisfaction in setting and achieving their goals.
We took this step because we are confident in our ability to set higher standards in quality and service. We see potential challenges as opportunities. However, for those considering taking this step, it is important to reflect on the psychological aspects of self-employment.
What does self-employment mean for mental wellbeing?
Self-employment can be compared to an exciting rollercoaster ride. The beginning is often characterised by a feeling of anticipation and excitement. Visions unfold as to what direction the business will take. This is then followed by the “nitty gritty” stage where careful planning and consideration take centre stage and first concrete steps are taken.
This initial high is followed by a pragmatic shift when, for example, mundane everyday decisions are taken. Which email tool should I choose? Which font should I use? How do I create the first invoice? These small decisions are part of the adventure and contribute to personal development, but they also shine a light on how even the most unremarkable aspects of the business throw up questions that need to be answered.
Every decision, however small, is important. The ups and downs mean that every day is different with a rainbow of positives and negatives.
The reality of self-employment is dynamic and full of possibilities. It is normal to occasionally feel overwhelmed, but these moments are valuable learning opportunities. Against this background, it is important to keep a focus on the support factors that matter most and on which practical steps are the most significant at this timepoint? On a personal level it is important to reflect on how to deal with the pressure and find time to unwind.
Self-employment leads to a reorganisation of routines, roles, and identity. In particular, increased self-efficacy is a positive aspect. Decisions lead directly to results and consequences and learning curves are steep. Successes are motivating while uncertainties and challenges are also part of the process and sometimes simply have to be endured. Once overcome, they can strengthen creativity and adaptability.
In our own experience, it was very beneficial not to be alone in the process of founding our business. We were able to experience all the ups and downs together, support one another, and share inspiring moments. Especially during the first year, uncertainty is high, and camaraderie and mutual support are very important.
Ambition and Joy: A Constructive Union
The goal is to combine both aspects: small, achievable learning goals that lead to motivation and positive momentum.
Self-employment opens up great opportunities for a sense of purpose, autonomy, and personal development. By consciously nurturing our psychological resources, we create an environment in which we can thrive. Self-employment is an exciting and rewarding path. With clear structures, supportive networks, and conscious self-management, we can transform challenges into creative progress and personal growth.
Every step forward is a step in the right direction — the rollercoaster is simply part of the journey.
